DAR ES SALAAM, Jan 8 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — THE Tanzanian government has invested over 280bn/- in various electricity projects to ensure a reliable power supply in Dar es Salaam region.
This was disclosed by the Minister for Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, who made the remarks during his visit to electricity receiving and cooling substations at Gongo la Mboto, Kinyerezi I Extension, and Mabibo in Dar es Salaam.
“Dar es Salaam is among the areas with the highest electricity consumption in the country. If you look at the electricity generation we have, nearly all 750 megawatts are consumed in Dar es Salaam region alone. This government’s investment aims to ensure a reliable supply of electricity for ordinary domestic users and industries so that they can continue to grow,” he said.
He added that the investment is also intended to reduce dependence on a single power cooling substation and instead establish enough substations to completely eliminate electricity challenges whenever a fault occurs at any one facility.
“The Tanzanian government’s goal with this investment is to ensure that Dar Es Salaam has a ring circuit electricity system, so that when power is unavailable on one side, it can be supplied through another route. This will enable residents of Dar es Salaam and surrounding areas to have reliable electricity at all times,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Managing Director of TANESCO, Lazaro Twange, said the investment of more than 280bn/- for Dar es Salaam is part of over 15tri/- allocated by the Sixth Phase Government to implement various electricity generation, transmission, and distribution projects nationwide.
“The President has directed us clearly—she does not want the electricity sector to be seen as an obstacle to people’s development. We thank her for enabling us, and all these efforts are aimed at ensuring electricity continues to be an enabling sector for business, investment, and service delivery,” Mr Twange said.
The Energy Minister’s visit is part of his ongoing inspections of electricity projects across the country, aimed at assessing their progress and ensuring they are completed on time so that Tanzanians can continue to enjoy reliable electricity services. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
