Tanzania supports AU efforts to ensure Somalia is firmly united

DAR ES SALAAM, Jan 8 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — THE United Republic of Tanzania said it fully supports the African Union’s efforts to resolve the conflict in Somalia and strongly opposes any actions aimed at dividing the country, weakening its authority or undermining its territorial boundaries.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, revealed this during the 1324th meeting of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC), which he participated in virtually from the Ministry’s sub-offices in Dar es Salaam.

In his remarks, the minister expressed Tanzania’s support for the statement issued by the Chairperson of the African Union, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, on Dec 26, 2025, stressing that any attempt to undermine Somalia’s unity and sovereignty is contrary to the principles of the AU and poses a serious risk to peace and stability in the Horn of Africa and across the African continent.

Additionally, Kombo underscored the importance of unity and solidarity among AU Member States, quoting the Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, who once said, “Unity may not make us rich, but it can make it difficult for Africa and its people to be despised or disrespected.”

He further urged African countries to speak with one voice on critical issues affecting the continent.

The meeting brought together Ministers of Foreign Affairs from AU Member States and deliberated on agenda items focused on safeguarding and respecting the sovereignty, authority, territorial integrity and national unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

Tanzania’s participation in the meeting reaffirmed its commitment to supporting regional and international efforts to promote peace, security, and solidarity in Africa, particularly in addressing challenges facing the Horn of Africa.

The meeting was opened by the Chairperson of the AU Peace and Security Council for January 2026, Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, who is also the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and attended by Ministers of Foreign Affairs from Somalia, Djibouti, and other AU Member States. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
