TRIPOLI, Jan 2 (NNN-XINHUA) — The Security Directorates Support Force of the Interior Ministry of Libya said Thursday that two of its members were killed in a drone attack targeting one of its patrols in the city of Ajaylat, about 80 km west of the capital Tripoli.
In a statement, the force said the attack occurred between Wednesday night and early Thursday while the patrol was responding to a report about a boat preparing for illegal migration.
The statement added that the patrol was “targeted by a drone while attempting to tow the boat from the sea, resulting in injuries of varying severity to two members of the force and the death of two others.”
The force did not disclose the identity of the drone, noting that the public prosecution has launched an investigation into the incident.
Since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that ousted Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has experienced prolonged political instability, which has fueled the rise of illegal migration in the country. — NNN-XINHUA
