NEW YORK, Dec 28 (NNN-AGENCIES) — New York State had 71,123 cases of flu last week. That’s the highest number of weekly cases since the state began keeping track in 2004.
The New York State Health Department says cases rose 38% for the week ending Dec 20. There have now been 189,312 cases of flu so far this season, they said.
Hospitalizations rose 63%, from 2,251 to 3,666 statewide.
The Health Department points out that reported flu cases have gone up in recent years with more labs testing and reporting results.
They also note that flu typically peaks in January, so cases could continue to rise.
Health workers who are not vaccinated are being asked to wear masks in areas around patients or residents.
They encourage people to get the flu shot, take antivirals if it’s been less than 48 hours since symptoms began, and follow these other tips:
- Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Stay home when sick.
- Cover cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. — NNN-AGENCIES
