KABUL, Nov 30 (NNN-BNA) – Afghan police arrested seven individuals on the charge of cutting trees and deforestation in the western Badghis province, provincial police spokesman, Sediq Sediqi said, today.
All the seven people were busy cutting pistachio trees in Bala Murghab district on Friday night, when police arrested them red-handed, the official added.
Although there are no official statistics on the territory covered by forests in Afghanistan, hundreds of thousands of hectares of forests have been destroyed by timber mafia and warlords, over the past more than four decades of war and instability in the country.
However, the Afghan government, since assuming power in Aug, 2021, has banned deforestation and hunting wild animals, as part of efforts to protect the environment, in the post-war nation.– NNN-BNA
