German FM Visits Damascus, Pledges Support For Syria’s Transition

DAMASCUS, Oct 31 (NNN-SANA) – Visiting German Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, met here yesterday, with Syrian interim leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, and foreign affairs chief, Asaad Hassan al-Shibani, and reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting Syria’s political and economic transition.

During a press conference, following the meeting, Wadephul said, Syria is entering a decisive stage of rebuilding, which must ensure the “dignity and security” for all its citizens, “regardless of gender, religious, ethnic, or social background.”

Wadephul noted Syria’s potential to become “a key state,” connecting the Gulf region and the Mediterranean, adding that, his visit aims to further strengthen bilateral ties and explore new avenues of cooperation.

The meeting focused on establishing a Syrian-German Business Council, to enhance economic cooperation and investment opportunities. Germany reaffirmed support for Syria’s unity and sovereignty, and voiced readiness to assist in Syria’s reconstruction, education, infrastructure development, and transitional justice, among others.

Both sides also addressed security coordination and the situation of Syrian refugees in Germany, expressing shared interest in improving conditions for displaced Syrians.– NNN-SANA
