Pacific Islands Forum Summit Wraps Up With Message Of Unity, Shared Goals

HONIARA, Sept 13 (NNN-PINA) – The annual summit of the Pacific Islands Forum, wrapped up yesterday, in Honiara, the Solomon Islands, leaving behind a strong message of unity and shared goals.

A communiqué released after the meeting stated that, the leaders reached a series of consensus on key issues, such as, climate change, regional peace and security, and economic development.

“Leaders reaffirmed that climate change remains the single greatest threat to the livelihoods, security, and well-being of peoples of the Pacific,” the communiqué said.

Against the backdrop of an increasingly complex geostrategic environment, the leaders also endorsed the Blue Pacific Ocean of Peace Declaration, which advocates dialogue and consensus, to safeguard regional peace and stability.

During the summit, leaders focused on regional integration, sustainable fisheries, principles of labour mobility, and digital transformation, among others, according to the communiqué.

The 54th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting was held here from Monday through Friday, under the theme “Iumi Tugeda: Act Now for an Integrated Blue Pacific Continent.” In Solomon Islands Pijin, “iumi tugeda” means “you and me together” and is a phrase symbolising unity and collective action.

Founded in 1971, the 18-member Pacific Islands Forum aims to address pressing issues and challenges, and foster collaboration and cooperation among countries and territories of the Pacific region.– NNN-PINA
