BAKU, Sept 5 (NNN-TNA) – Azerbaijan launched the construction of large battery energy storage systems, to boost the growth of renewable energy, the state energy company, AzerEnerji, said yesterday.
The systems are the largest in the Commonwealth of Independent States, of which Azerbaijan is a member, and are being installed at the 500-kilovolt Absheron substation, near Baku, and the 220-kilovolt Agdash substation in central Azerbaijan. Together, they will provide 250 megawatts of capacity and 500 megawatt-hours of storage, AzerEnerji said.
The project is designed to stabilise the grid, reduce interruptions to renewable power, balance peak demand, and restore the system in the event of outages.
The initiative is part of a broader programme, to integrate two gigawatts of new solar and wind power plants into the national grid by 2027, according to the company.– NNN-TNA
