Austria To Hold Early Elections On Sept 29

VIENNA, Austria, July 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Austrians will go to the polls again on Sept 29, to elect a new National Council, lawmakers decided on Wednesday.

Local media reported that, the current caretaker cabinet first approved the ordinance for the early elections, with the main committee of the National Council unanimously approving it afterwards.

The early election will be following the collapse of the coalition government, on the back of a corruption scandal involving the right-wing populist Freedom Party.

Subsequent measures by then-Chancellor and leader of the conservative People’s Party, Sebastian Kurz, to stabilise the government did not succeed, and he was ousted via a no-confidence motion.

The caretaker cabinet, implemented in the wake of the collapse and headed by Chancellor, Brigitte Bierlein, was only intended to govern in the interim period, until the new election.– NNN-AGENCIES
