ISLAMABAD, Sept 1 (NNN-APP) – At least 33 people were killed, and over two million were affected, as torrential rain triggered severe floods in parts of Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province, since the start of the week, said an official yesterday.

Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Director General, Irfan Ali Kathia, said that, nearly half a million people have been moved to safe places, as severe flooding continues to inundate vast areas of Punjab, adding that, rescue and relief operations are continuing.

He said that, more than 800 boats and 1,300 rescue personnel are involved in the evacuation from affected areas, mostly located in rural areas, near the banks of major rivers of Punjab.

Three major rivers in Punjab are witnessing dangerous levels, the PDMA official said.

Special relief camps have been established in parts of Punjab, providing food, shelter, and basic health services to flood-affected people.

At least 854 people have died and 1,130 others were injured, in rain-related incidents across Pakistan since Jun 26, this year, according to the National Disaster Management Authority.– NNN-APP
