BRASILIA, Aug 18 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — The 2024/25 corn crop in Brazil was estimated at a record 137.0 million tons by the National Supply Company (Conab) on Thursday; an increase of about 5 million tons compared to last month’s forecast.
The projection was raised due to the increase in second-crop corn volumes, now estimated at 109.6 million tons, compared to 104.5 million in last month’s estimate.
The state-owned company, equivalent of USDA also raised the forecast for corn exports to 40 million tons, up from 36 million tons estimated in July. In the report, Conab cites the greater availability of second-crop corn in the domestic market and “likely redirection of international demand toward South American corn, given the current tariff disputes between the United States and key grain importers.”
With the latest corn volume, it is estimated that the total cereal and oil seed production in Brazil for the 2024/25 harvest is estimated in 345.2 million tons, according to the latest Conab crops survey. The increase both in corn and soybeans is because of the planting of a larger area, plus improved yields.
In effect the current crop is 47.7 million tons higher than that of 2023/2024. A larger sown area, 2.5%, reaching 81,9 million tons, plus higher average yields, 4.214 kilos per hectare compared to 3.772 kilos in 2023/24.
The soybean crop has been estimated at 169.7 million tons, 15% higher than in 2023/24. Excellent climate conditions in core areas plus ample credit facilities helped to boost area and production. Likewise with rice, which also had a robust production, according to Conab, with 12,3 million tons. This is equivalent to 1,7 million tons additional compared to 2023/24. Planted area increased 8,8% and most favorable conditions in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the main production area, was a determining factor. — NNN-MERCOPRESS
