DAR ES SALAAM, Aug 15 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has been awarded the prestigious Medal of Honour by the International Military Sports Council (CISM) in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the development of sports, particularly within military institutions and in fostering peace through sport.
The honour was conferred during a special ceremony held at State House, Dar es Salaam, where the CISM Vice President for Africa, Major General Maikano Abdullahi from Nigeria, presented the medal on behalf of the Council.
The award presentation coincided with Tanzania hosting the CISM World Military Games, whose closing ceremony took place later at Uhuru Stadium . The games brought together hundreds of athletes from various armed forces across the world, competing in a wide range of sporting disciplines.
In her acceptance speech, President Samia expressed deep gratitude for the recognition, describing it as not only a personal honour but also a tribute to Tanzania’s commitment to promoting sportsmanship, discipline, and unity through athletics.
“This award is not just for me, but for all Tanzanians and our men and women in uniform who believe in the power of sport to unite people and promote peace. Sports have the ability to transcend borders, build friendships, and strengthen cooperation among nations,” she said.
The Head of State emphasized the role of sports as a bridge for global peace, noting that Tanzania will continue to invest in both civilian and military sporting infrastructure to nurture talent and inspire the next generation of athletes.
President Samia also lauded the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) for their active participation in international sports events, noting that their discipline and achievements have raised the country’s profile on the global stage.
The CISM President, Colonel Hervé Piccirillo, praised President Samia’s leadership, highlighting her government’s support for hosting the games and her dedication to using sports as a diplomatic tool.
This marks the first time a Tanzanian Head of State has received the CISM Medal of Honour, placing President Samia alongside a select group of global leaders recognized for their impact on sports and peace. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
