Indonesia Mulls Electricity Tariff Discount To Boost Consumption

JAKARTA, Aug 15 (NNN-ANTARA) – The Indonesian government was considering introducing an electricity tariff discount, as a stimulus to spur consumption, Secretary of the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Susiwijono Moegiarso said, yesterday.

According to Susiwijono, the policy was still under review. He noted that, such a measure could be key to boosting consumption, maintaining purchasing power, and supporting economic growth.

He emphasised that, the stimulus aimed to maintain the balance between supply and demand. However, he cautioned that, it could not be decided hastily, as it would require the use of state funds.

“Many aspects still need to be addressed, because electricity already receives subsidies and energy compensation. So, a more in-depth study is definitely needed. Since there are compensation subsidies involved, it still needs to be carefully reviewed,” he said.

The government had previously provided an electricity tariff discount, as an economic stimulus from Jan to Feb, this year.– NNN-ANTARA
