ALMATY, Jul 26 (NNN-KNA) – Ten people were killed and four others were injured in Kazakhstan, in two separate road accidents that occurred on Thursday and yesterday, the national highway operator, KazAvtoZhol, said in a statement, yesterday.
Six people, including a road worker, were killed and two others injured, in an accident in the Almaty Region, south-eastern Kazakhstan, yesterday morning. According to reports, a speeding minivan crashed into a wheeled tractor, during road maintenance work on the highway.
Preliminary findings indicate that the minivan driver was speeding and attempted to overtake a heavy vehicle, using the right-hand lane, entering a cordoned-off section of the road and colliding with maintenance equipment.
The other accident occurred on Thursday morning, killing four people and injuring two others, in a collision between a minivan and a backhoe loader, on a highway in the Zhambyl Region, southern Kazakhstan.
The minivan driver failed to observe the speed limit or maintain a safe distance, leading to a crash with the specialised vehicle travelling in the same direction, according to a preliminary report.
A criminal investigation is currently underway.
According to official statistics, 15,698 road accidents were recorded across the country in the first half of this year, marking a 54 percent year-on-year increase.– NNN-KNA
