Analysis: Tanzania push to become an upper-middle-income country with a 1 trillion-dollar economy

DAR ES SALAAM, July 21 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — TANZANIA aspires to become an upper-middleincome country with a projected economy of one trillion US dollars by 2050. The newly launched Tanzania Development Vision 2050 (TDV50) identifies catalytic drivers to support its implementation.

The drivers, designed to accelerate progress, foster innovation and improve productivity across sectors, are outlined in the 64-page dossier as integrated logistics, science and technology, energy, research and development (R&D) and digital transformation.

A development vision for a country is a long-term, aspirational articulation of a nation’s desired future state, outlining the goals and strategies for achieving a better quality of life for its citizens. It’s a roadmap that guides a nation’s development efforts, encompassing economic, social and political dimensions.

As President Samia Suluhu Hassan said during the launching of the TDV 2050 in Dodoma on Thursday, it is pertinent for Tanzania to embrace technological advancement, including the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Every development vision has key components and Tanzanian one is no exception: There are aspirational Goals: A development vision outlines what the country wants to achieve in the future, such as becoming a middleincome or high-income nation, improving living standards, ensuring social justice, or enhancing environmental sustainability.

As for strategic framework, it provides a framework for achieving these goals, including specific objectives, key sectors for development like agriculture, industry, education, health and strategies for implementation.

Resource mobilisation is another component: A vision helps mobilise resources – human, financial, natural etc towards shared goals, fostering a sense of collective purpose and national unity.

Customarily, a vision is not just a short-term plan but a long-term vision, typically spanning 10, 20, or even 50 years, providing direction for future generations.

A successful vision involves the participation and ownership of various stakeholders, including the government, private sector, civil society and citizens, ensuring broadbased support and commitment.

There is also an aspect of monitoring and evaluation: The vision should be accompanied by mechanisms for monitoring progress, evaluating performance and making necessary adjustments to stay on track.

Tanzania Development Vision 2025 was aimed to elevate Tanzania to a middle-income country by 2025, focusing on modernisation of agriculture, industrial transformation, infrastructure development and technological advancement and look, it has succeeded so much. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
