Tanzania, Kenya launch cross-border fiber optic link

TANGA (Tanzania), July 19 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — TANZANIA and Kenya have taken a significant step toward strengthening diplomatic and trade relations by officially launching a cross-border fiber optic link.

The connection integrates Tanzania’s National ICT Broadband Backbone (NICTBB) with Kenya’s undersea cables in Mombasa via the ICT Authority of Kenya.

The inauguration ceremony took place in Horohoro, Mkinga District, Tanga Region. It was officiated by Tanzania’s Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Jerry Silaa, who stated that the project will open up new opportunities for citizens in both countries to access affordable and reliable internet services, thanks to improved communication infrastructure.

“We are reviewing our service delivery policies between the two countries to ensure citizens receive high-quality and affordable communication services,” said Silaa.

On his part, the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy in the Republic of Kenya, William Gitau, emphasized that the integration of the fiber networks is a critical move toward fostering technological innovation among the people of both nations. He added that this initiative supports not only social development but also economic growth across the East African region.

Representing the Permanent Secretary of Tanzania’s Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, Engineer Leo Magoma, noted that so far, 109 out of 131 districts in Tanzania have been connected to the National ICT Broadband Backbone. This milestone aims to ensure wider access to reliable internet services across the country.

This strategic project is expected to enhance digital cooperation between Tanzania and Kenya and stimulate growth in key sectors such as commerce, education, healthcare, and other social services through modern communication technology. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
