Singapore Starts Fining, Jailing Riders On Pedestrian-Only Paths

SINGAPORE, Jul 2 (NNN-XINHUA) – Singapore has begun imposing fines and jail terms on individuals, who ride on pedestrian-only paths, in a bid to protect more vulnerable pedestrians, such as seniors and children, the Land Transport Authority (LTA), said, in a statement yesterday.

From Jul 1 (yesterday), offenders riding bicycles or using motorised and non-motorised personal mobility devices, on these restricted paths, may face fines of up to 2,000 Singapore dollars (about 1,571 U.S. dollars), imprisonment for up to three months, or both.

The LTA said, it would adopt a measured and considered approach, when determining whether an offence has occurred. However, it noted that, there would be “zero tolerance towards those who speed or ride in a rash and reckless manner on paths.”

The designated pedestrian-only paths are footpaths located alongside cycling paths and are clearly marked with signage and logos to indicate their intended use. Only pedestrians and users of personal mobility aids, typically used by those with walking difficulties, are permitted on these paths.– NNN-XINHUA
