HANOI, May 21 (NNN-VNA) – Vietnamese lawmakers, yesterday, proposed tougher prison sentences for certain environmental crimes, drug-related offenses, and violations of food safety regulations.
The proposals were made during the National Assembly (NA)’s discussions, on a draft revision of the Penal Code in the capital Hanoi.
According to the report, the amendments aim to strengthen deterrence and enhance the effectiveness of crime prevention and control.
Hoang Thanh Tung, chairman of the NA’s Committee on Legal and Judicial Affairs, proposed doubling monetary fines for environmental offenses, and crimes that threaten public safety and order.
The draft law should further require offenders to take responsibility for remedying the consequences of their actions, he said.– NNN-VNA
