Over 1,000 Sri Lankans Have Died From Road Accidents, So Far, This Year: Police

COLOMBO, May 20 (NNN-XINHUA) – 1,007 people have lost their lives in road accidents in Sri Lanka, so far this year, Police Media Spokesperson, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Buddhika Manatunga told media, yesterday.

He said, these deaths occurred in 944 fatal accidents, that were reported between Jan 1 and May 18, adding that, the main causes of these accidents were negligence, drunk driving, reckless driving, and poor vehicle maintenance.

The police are carrying out a nationwide initiative, aimed at reducing traffic accidents, which include driver awareness programmes, he said.

Last year, 2,541 deaths were recorded, from 2,403 fatal road accidents in the country, according to the police.– NNN-XINHUA
