MALÉ, May 13 (NNN-PSM) – The Maldivian government aims to cut its carbon emissions to 1.52 million tonnes this year, Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, said, yesterday.
The efforts to enhance the use of renewable energy sources are paving the way to achieving the target of reducing carbon emissions, Ibrahim said, during the International Zero Carbon Islands and Green, Low-Carbon Development Conference, yesterday.
The minister was quoted as saying that, solar energy systems are being installed across the Maldives, and the government is working to identify additional strategies, to reduce harmful emissions.
The Maldives had an installed renewable energy capacity of 53 megawatts, at the beginning of last year, just four percent of the nation’s total energy consumption. The government now aims to boost that figure to 33 percent over the next five years.– NNN-PSM
