Flight delays, diversions at Changi Airport due to bad weather, drones

SINGAPORE, June 25 (Bernama) — Approximately 15 departures and three arrivals were delayed while seven flights were diverted from Changi Airport due to bad weather and unauthorised drone activities on Monday, according to Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS).

“As a precautionary measure, arrival and departure flights were carefully regulated for short periods of time between 8.07pm and 9.07pm,” said CAAS in response to media queries via a statement which was issued past midnight.

CAAS noted that investigations are ongoing.

It reminded members of the public that the authorities take a serious view of errant operations of unmanned aircraft which may pose threats to aviation or endanger the personal safety of others, and would not hesitate to take enforcement action against those who contravene regulations.

“Offenders could face a fine not exceeding S$20,000 or imprisonment for a term of up to 12 months, or both,” it added.

Last week, CAAS confirmed sightings of drones flying in the vicinity of Changi Airport on June 18 and 19, 2019 that had caused the airport to operate with one runway.

About 37 scheduled departure and arrival flights were delayed and one arrival flight was diverted to Kuala Lumpur.
