Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, May 23 – Thousands of Ethiopian Muslims gathered in capital Addis Ababa for an Iftar (fast-breaking) dinner with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Johannesburg, South Africa, May 23 – South Africa’s parliament on Wednesday elected Cyril Ramaphosa, 66, president of the republic. Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, who presided over the election ceremony, declared Ramaphosa as the duly elected president after he was nominated unopposed. South Africa held elections on May 8 which Ramaphosa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) won with a reduced majority after obtaining 58% of the vote. Photo courtesy of President Twitter
Washington, US, May 23 – Omanian author Jokha Alharthi and her translator, Marilyn Booth, with their Man Booker International Prize. Omani author Jokha Alharthi became the first Arab female author to win the prestigious Man Booker Prize for her novel “Celestial Bodies.” Omani author Jokha Alharthi won this year’s Man Booker International Prize, becoming the first Arabic writer to win the literary prize.
