LIMA, May 8 (NNN-ANDINA) — Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Elizabeth Galdo announced that Peru was chosen as the venue for the “70th Meeting of UN Tourism Regional Commission for the Americas” to be held in the city of Lima in 2025.

Therefore, Peru will have the opportunity to welcome representatives from countries of the Americas in order to dialogue, debate, as well as to generate synergies, proposals, and considerations that will boost the sector’s growth.

“We are committed to the development of sustainable tourism, which enables communities to make the most of their resources without harming their preservation,” Galdo expressed.

“Right now, the trend worldwide leads us towards the practice of community tourism, nature tourism,” she added.

The 70th Meeting of UN Tourism Regional Commission for the Americas will enable Peru to highlight its entire tourism offer, from its landscapes and spaces —rich in flora and fauna— to its varied culture and renowned gastronomy.

Besides, it will involve the promotion of regions that can host world-class events, which are known as meetings tourism or MICE tourism.

The designation of Peru as event host for 2025 was ratified at the end of the 69th edition held in the city of Varadero, Cuba.

On the occasion, Peru’s Deputy Tourism Minister Madeleine Burns highlighted the strategies that the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) has been implementing to promote economic strengthening and the participation of women in community tourism management and development.

The participation and presence of San Pedro de Raqchi District Mayor, Modesta Challco Inca, also stood out, since the town was granted the “Best Tourism Village” seal by the World Tourism Organization in 2023.

UN Tourism has six regional commissions: Africa, Americas, South Asia, East Asia and the Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East. These commissions meet at least once a year and are made up of all executive and affiliate members of each region.

Regional commissions were created in 1975 as subsidiary bodies of the General Assembly and allow Member States to remain in contact with the UN Tourism General Secretariat to which they submit proposals and express concerns.

The board of directors for the Americas is currently chaired by the Dominican Republic, while the vice-chairmanship is held by both Argentina and Paraguay. — NNN-ANDINA
