Laos To Improve Nitrogen Use In Sustainable Agriculture

VIENTIANE, May 6 (NNN-KPL) – Lao National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute (NAFRI), has jointly launched a project, in efforts to improve nitrogen use efficiency in rice farming, and promote sustainable agricultural development in the country.

The project “Quantifying the Impacts of Nitrogen Use and Developing Sustainable Agricultural Management Strategies in Laos Rice-Based Farming Systems” will be implemented until 2028, in cooperation with the University of Melbourne and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, Lao national TV reported, today.

The project will broaden knowledge on the consequences that inorganic and organic nitrogen fertiliser inputs have on low-input Lao rice-based agricultural systems, aiming to improve nitrogen use efficiency in rice farming and farmers’ incomes, with associated environmental benefits resulting from reduced losses of nitrogen from farmers’ fields.

The NAFRI intends to develop modernised agricultural technologies that enhance production systems, support national food security, promote commercialisation, and ensure sustainable resource management.

The project is expected to help improve rural livelihoods, strengthen food security, and minimise the environmental impacts of agriculture, according to the report.– NNN-KPL
