Two Killed, Seven Missing As Boat Capsized In India’s Odisha

NEW DELHI, Apr 20 (NNN-PTI) – At least two people were killed and seven others went missing yesterday, after the boat carrying them capsized in a river, in the eastern Indian state of Odisha, police said.

The boat capsized in Mahanadi River, near Rengali, in Jharsuguda district, about 294 km north-west of Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha.

According to officials, over 50 people, including women and children, were in the boat at the time of its capsize. However, 42 people were rescued by local fishermen and rescuers.

Reports said, the boat had taken the people to a temple on an islet in the middle of the river. However, on its way back the boat capsized.

Boat capsizing incidents are common in India, as many people, especially in rural areas, use traditionally made boats as a mode of transport.– NNN-PTI
