Vietnam’s Van Thinh Phat’s Chairwoman, Faced Death Sentence For Embezzlement

HANOI, Apr 12 (NNN-VNA) – Truong My Lan, chairwoman of real estate developer, Van Thinh Phat, faced the death penalty yesterday, for embezzlement.

She faced other charges of 20 years in prison each, for giving bribe and violating bank regulations. The highest sentence she faced was the death penalty.

The indictment said, holding 85 to 91.5 percent of the Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB)’s total shares, she caused damage of about 498 trillion Vietnamese dong (about 19.9 billion U.S. dollars) to the bank.

From Jan 1, 2012, to Dec 31, 2017, the defendant violated banking regulations and caused losses of more than 64 trillion dong (2.5 billion dollars). From Jan 1, 2018 to Oct 7, 2022, she misappropriated assets of more than 433 trillion dong (17.3 billion dollars) in total.– NNN-VNA
