VALLETTA, March 28 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The Malta Parliament has approved the appointment of Myriam Spiteri Debono as the country’s new President with the consensus of all parliamentarians. 

Accordingly, Debono, 71, will replace President George Vella, whose 5-year term will end on April 4.

This female politician will become the 11th president of Malta and also the 3rd female president of this Southern European island nation.

This is the first time in Malta’s history that a new president has been chosen through a parliamentary motion, which requires a two-thirds majority of parliamentarians after the country made changes to the Constitution. back in 2020. 

Debono was proposed by Prime Minister Robert Abela and also received the support of opposition leader Bernard Grech.

Born and raised in Gozo, Debono studied English Literature and Linguistics at the University of Malta. She was one of the first members of the Gender Equality Committee when this agency was first established. — NNN-AGENCIES
