RABAT, Feb 19 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The Moroccan Navy rescued 141 migrants on a flimsy boat off the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday.

The Royal Moroccan Armed Forces said all of the migrants, including 3 women and 2 minors, came from sub-Saharan African countries.

They were rescued in a 15-hour operation due to difficult weather conditions.

The migrants set off from the coast of Mauritania on Feb 10, intending to reach Spain’s Canary Islands off the northwest coast of Africa.

After their boat ran aground about 275 km from Dakhla port, the migrants sent a distress signal and were received by Moroccan authorities.

After receiving medical care, the migrants were handed over to the Royal Moroccan Gendarmerie to carry out the necessary administrative procedures.

According to official statistics, in 2023, the Moroccan army arrested about 87,000 undocumented migrants, most from Sub-Saharan Africa. — NNN-AGENCIES
