21 People Confirmed Dead In DRC’s Tribe Conflict Area

BUNIA, the Democratic Republic of Congo, May 20 (NNN-AGENCIES) – At least 21 people have been killed and 11 others missing, after a village in the northwestern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) came under attack, local authorities said on Sunday.

Assailants from the Lendu community attacked a group of fishermen in Tara village, along Lake Albert in Djugu, Ituri Province, said Pilo Kakoraki, a local official.

For several months, the group has been operating in the Djugu region and has been hit hard by the army, Kakoraki said.

Approximately 50,000 people have fled the unstable Djugu region in the last two years, following recurring conflicts between the two tribes of Hema and Lendu, due to land disputes in Ituri Province.– NNN-AGENCIES
