MEXICO CITY, Jan 3 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Mexican authorities said they were looking for 31 migrants who were kidnapped while on their way to the border area between this country and the US by bus.

According to local officials, the incident occurred on Dec 30, in Tamaulipas state, bordering the US.

The bus driver said the bus was stopped by five other vehicles and 31 foreign migrants were kidnapped, with only five Mexican passengers remaining on the bus. The above bus departed from the city of Monterrey, neighboring Nuevo Leon state, and was on its way to Matamoros, bordering Brownsville, Texas (USA).

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said the authorities conducted an investigation and searched for the migrants as soon as they were kidnapped.

Highways in Tamaulipas state are among the most dangerous in Mexico, with criminal gangs regularly conducting kidnappings and extortion.

US police said that in recent weeks, there have been about 10,000 migrants crossing the Mexican border into this country every day. — NNN-AGENCIES
