Five Injured After Elderly Driver Crashes Into Tutoring School Near Tokyo

TOKYO, Dec 8 (NNN-NHK) – A car, yesterday plowed into a building, housing a tutoring school near Tokyo, resulting in injuries to five individuals, including the driver in his 80s, local media reports showed.

The accident took place around 4:30 p.m. local time, when a passenger car, driven by an 86-year-old man, collided with a building that houses a private tutoring school in Aoba Ward, Yokohama City, according to local police.

It plowed into a room on the first floor, from an adjacent parking lot, injuring five people, including the driver, a 90-year-old woman accompanying him, a male tutor in his 50s and two young part-time male employees inside the building.

All of them were transported to a hospital and remained conscious.

Local authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

As Japan grapples with the challenges of its rapidly aging population, the safety of elderly drivers also raises concerns. Official data showed that in 2022, the number of deadly traffic accidents caused by drivers aged 75 or over in the country rose to 379.– NNN-NHK
