Egyptian President, Italian PM Discussed Ways To Combat Illegal Migration

CAIRO, Jul 7 (NNN-MENA) – Egyptian President, Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, and Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, yesterday discussed the two countries’ joint efforts to combat illegal migration.

During the phone conversation, Sisi and Meloni also underlined the importance of coordinating international efforts, to stop irregular migration, the Egyptian Presidency said in a statement.

Sisi commended ongoing Egyptian-Italian cooperation to address the many challenges in the Mediterranean region, it added.

The two leaders’ conversation also focused on the latest development of bilateral relations and the global food crisis, according to the statement.

Both Sisi and Meloni emphasised the need to hold intensive coordination and consultations on various regional issues.

Egypt used to be a popular destination for illegal migrants, who faced difficult economic conditions back home and tried to travel through Egypt to neighbouring Libya, in an attempt to reach Europe via the Mediterranean Sea.

With improved security conditions, Egypt has succeeded in stopping the influx of illegal migrants since 2016.– NNN-MENA
