Sri Lanka To Import Hatching Eggs From Netherlands To Tackle Chicken, Egg Shortage

COLOMBO, Jun 9 (NNN-XINHUA) – Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Agriculture announced yesterday, the import of 176,000 hatching eggs from the Netherlands, to solve the current shortage of chicken meat and eggs in the country.

The ministry said in a press release that, the hatching eggs will be imported through the state-owned National Livestock Development Board.

Minister of Agriculture, Mahinda Amaraweera, has instructed officials to take steps to distribute the eggs to chicken farms in the private sector at a subsidised price.

This stock of hatching eggs is to arrive in Sri Lanka next month, said the ministry.

Prices of chicken and eggs in Sri Lanka have increased in recent months, due to high feed costs and the lack of hatching eggs and hens.– NNN-XINHUA
