12 Killed, Many Injured From Thunderstorm In India

NEW DELHI, May 27 (NNN-PTI) – At least 12 people were killed and many others injured, after a thunderstorm hit the western Indian state of Rajasthan, officials said yesterday.

The strong thunderstorm that began late Thursday night wreaked havoc in many state districts.

According to officials, casualties were reported in Tonk district, about 102 km south of Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan.

“We have got reports that 12 people lost their lives and many others injured, in incidents caused by the thunderstorm here,” Chinmayi Gopal, district collector in Tonk, said. “The casualties were caused due to house and wall collapse.”

Gopal said, a survey of loss of life and property in the thunderstorm was being conducted, and relief measures have been initiated.

“We’re providing medical assistance to the injured, and people whose houses have been destroyed are being shifted to shelters,” she said. “We will be providing relief materials to people soon.”

The storm affected power supply in many places in the state, and strong winds flung roadside boardings.

India’s state-run broadcaster, All India Radio, said, the speed of stormy winds was recorded at 96 km per hour, at the airport in Jaipur.

The regional office of the India Meteorological Department said, there was a possibility of continuing thunderstorms and rain in the state during the next three to four days.– NNN-PTI
