20 Political Parties Register To Contest In Cambodia’s July General Election

PHNOM PENH, May 9 (NNN-AKP) – Some 20 political parties had registered to contest in Cambodia’s forthcoming general election, as a 15-day party registration period ended yesterday, the National Election Committee (NEC) said, in a press statement.

“Twenty political parties have registered with the NEC, to compete in the seventh National Assembly election, and 11 of them have been officially recognised,” the statement said.

The NEC will decide within a week whether it will recognise the nine other registered political parties.

The nation is scheduled to hold a general election for the 125-seat National Assembly on July 23, 2023, and more than 9.7 million Cambodians have registered to cast their ballots.

In the last general election, held five years ago, 20 political parties participated in the race. As a result, the ruling Cambodian People’s Party won all 125 seats in parliament.– NNN-AKP
