VIENTIANE, May 9 (NNN-KPL) – Laos’ export of agricultural produce, in the first three months of 2023 reached over three million tonnes, worth more than 507 million U.S. dollars, surpassing 50 percent of the target for the whole year, Vientiane Mai newspaper reported, yesterday.
Laos exported a total of 3,032,517 tonnes of plant products in the first three months of 2023, with a total value of 507,644,615 U.S. dollars, equalling 56.40 percent of the target for 2023, and rose five percent compared with the same period last year, the report quoted Bounchan Kombounyasith, director general of Department of Agriculture under Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, as saying.
Laos has a huge opportunity to boost crop yields for export, particularly to China, with the China-Laos Railway able to transport perishable goods more efficiently and quickly.
The main products exported included 1.9 million tonnes of cassava, 230,987 tonnes of sugar cane, 269,979 tonnes of banana, 86,420 tonnes of watermelon, and 49,325 tonnes of maize.
Major export markets for Laos’ agricultural produce include China, Vietnam and Thailand, according to the report.– NNN-KPL
