Peru: Police capture participant in 1992 Tarata Street terrorist attack

LIMA, March 26 (NNN-ANDINA) — The Peruvian National Police on Saturday reported having captured one suspect responsible for the terrorist attack carried out on Tarata street in Lima’s Miraflores district back in 1992.

The suspect is Flumencio Jayo Diaz, also known as “Comrade Jorge,” who was arrested in Ayacucho region by agents of the National Police’s Directorate against Terrorism (Dircote), it was reported.

The Shining Path attack on Tarata street —a residential area in Miraflores district— took place on July 16, 1992.

An automobile full of explosives was detonated by the terrorist group triggering the death of 25 people, in addition to leaving 250 injured and major material damage.

In this context, Jayo reportedly participated in the preparation of this attack, following instructions from Martha Huatay, also known as “Comrade Rosa,” one ringleader of Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path terrorist organization).

An arrest warrant and pre-trial detention for nine months had been issued for him by the Judiciary. — NNN-ANDINA
