New Armed Attack Increases Insecurity in Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, April 23 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) – At least two people were killed and two others were wounded today in an armed attack in the community of Delmas in this capital, according to the local press Monday.

It is presumed that the assault, perpetrated this morning, was the result of a confrontation between two gangs in the town of Simon, near the international airport Toussaint Louverture, and even in the morning the bodies of the victims remained on the street.

In the last months the main city of the country is experiencing an escalation of insecurity with the disputes between armed bands that have already left several dead and many injured.

In fact, last week the neighborhood of La Saline, one of the most populous in Port-au-Prince and the seat of Parliament, commercial companies and the main informal market of the capital, remained besieged by the clashes and many merchants had to leave the area.

During the commemoration of Good Friday, the gang led by Arnel Joseph, who now takes refuge in Artibonite, attacked the Petite Riviÿre commune police station, leaving two people dead and vehicles burned.

‘No police officer has been killed or kidnapped inside that police station,’ said a police source based in the Artibonite department.

Press reports link the armed attack with the arrest days before of an alleged bandit by police officers from the Petite Riviÿre police station, however, the arrested was previously transferred to the delegation of Saint Marc.

Recently, and under the growing climate of insecurity, Prime Minister Jean Michel Lapin assured that he would fight the ‘guerrilla war’, while President Jovenel Moise ordered urgent measures to counteract the armed bandits that threaten the peace in the home and the public security.
