HEBRON, April 19 (NNN-WAFA) – Khalil Ahmad Shawamreh, 47, a Palestinian who has been detained in Israeli jails for 18 years, was released on Thursday.

At Zahiriya checkpoint to the south of Hebron in the occupied West Bank, Shawamreh was received by dozens of family members, faction leaders and representatives of the Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS) who welcomed him back in his homeland.

Shawamreh was detained by Israeli army on April 19, 2001 for resisting the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories, and was sentenced to 18 years behind bars. He is a member of the Palestinian Civil Police.

There are around 6000 Palestinians held in Israeli jails, many incarcerated for many years and even several life terms for resisting the Israeli occupation of their homeland.
