Thousands evacuated as floods worsen in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26 (NNN-Bernama) — The floods in Malaysia’s states of Sabah, Johor and Pahang worsened Thursday morning, sending more people to relief centres with Sarawak being the latest state to be hit by the disaster.

The Meteorological Department has forecast continuous rain in several districts in Sabah, as well as Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Johor.

In Sabah, the number of flood evacuees increased sharply to 6,313 compared to 1,421 Wednesday night. A total of 26 relief centres were opened in five districts in the state.

In Johor, the number of flood evacuees rose to 5,455 at 55 relief centres, while 164 people were placed at three relief centres in Pahang.

Meanwhile, Sarawak became the latest state to be hit by floods with 53 people from 16 families evacuated to two relief centres following heavy rain in Lundu and Sematan districts late Wednesday night.

MetMalaysia also predicted thunderstorms occurring in several areas in Sarawak until Thursday night.
