JAKARTA, Dec 8 (NNN-Bernama) — Former member of Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), Umar Patek, has been released on parole after serving half of his prison sentence in East Java.
According to local media reports, Umar, who had undergone deradicalisation programmes, was released on Wednesday.
He must now follow a guided programme until April 2030 and comply with the procedures to avoid revoking parole agreements, the reports said, quoting the Law and Human Rights Ministry’s spokesperson.
Rika Aprianti said Umar’s release on parole was also recommended by the country’s counter-terrorism agency (BNPT) and police counter-terrorism squad (Densus 88).
Umar was sentenced to 20 years in jail in June 2012 for his involvement in several terrorist attacks in Indonesia, including the Bali bombing incident in October 2002.
He was caught by Pakistani security forces in Abottabad, Pakistan, in January 2011 and extradited to Indonesia in August 2011.
