LIMA, Dec 5 (NNN-ANDINA) — Avian Influenza A virus subtype H5N1 (A/H5N1), commonly known as avian influenza (bird flu), continues to claim lives of birds in the beach area of Ancash region.

This time, local authorities ordered the burial of more than 1,500 birds that appeared dead on Los Chimus beach in the district of Samanco, Santa province.

Following the appearance of said dead animals, the District Municipality of Samanco (MDS) ordered the cleanup work —in accordance with pre-established protocols— to safeguard the health of the population.

The cleanup is carried out by workers at MDS’s Public Services Department, following all health protocols outlined by the National Agricultural Health Service (SENASA) for disinfection.

MDS’s Public Services Manager Ruben Cordova affirmed that additional cleanup works will take place on other beaches in Samanco on Monday as dead seabirds continue to appear along the coastline.

Dead pelicans have been found along the Ancash coast at Samanco, Casma, Chimbote, Nuevo Chimbote and Huarmey beaches.

In Chimbote, some citizens have posted photos of dying birds that have been seen in urban areas. — NNN-ANDINA
