Mongolian Capital’s Educational Institutions Switched To Online Classes Due To Extreme Weather

ULAN BATOR, Nov 29 (NNN-XINHUA) – The municipal government of Mongolia’s capital, Ulan Bator, has asked all kindergartens, schools and universities in the city, to hold online classes from yesterday, due to extreme cold, heavy snow and snow storms.

As of yesterday afternoon, snow and snow storms were hitting eastern, western and central parts of the country, and temperatures today are exceeding minus 25 degrees Celsius, according to the National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring.

On Sunday night, temperatures in the western provinces of Khovd and Zavkhan, exceeded minus 40 degrees Celsius, the weather monitoring agency said.

Large parts of Mongolia are to see extreme cold weather through the entire week, with expected overnight temperatures of 39 to 47 degrees Celsius below zero, the agency warned.

In addition, the agency warned drivers not to travel to the countryside, unless absolutely necessary, due to low visibility, icy roads and snow accumulations.

Mongolia’s climate is strongly continental, with long and frigid winters. Unstable weather events are also common in the country throughout the year.– NNN-XINHUA
