KUALA LUMPUR, April 13 (NNN-Bernama) — The advent of 5G technology is expected to improve digital entrepreneurship and e-commerce for the small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs), said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman Al-Ishsal Ishak.

5G is the fifth generation mobile technology, operating with a 5Ghz signal, and is set to offer speed of up to 1Gb per second, which will provide better speeds and coverage than the current 4G.

Al-Ishsal said the 5G technology would help SMEs to be more resilient and competitive in their business.

“Ninety percent of businesses in Malaysia are SMEs. By adopting technological enhancement, they will be able to increase productivity as well as strengthen the nation’s competitiveness in the global market,” he told Bernama after appearing as a guest on Bernama News Channel’s Biztalk programme here today.

Al-Ishsal also said it was necessary for SMEs to adopt digital technologies to be part of the digital ecosystem in the future.

He said although some SMEs had modernised their operations and businesses, the awareness on using the technology was still relatively low among them.

Hence the upcoming 5G showcase organised by MCMC, to be held in Putrajaya from April 18-21, would be able to educate them, he added.

A 5G related test launch will take place on April 18, scheduled to be officiated by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The public is invited to come and experience the wonders of 5G technology at the 5G showcase on April 20 and 21.

The 5G technology would only be launched and used commercially in the country by 2021 or 2022, Al-Ishsal said.
