Uzbekistan’s Samarkand All Set To Host 9th Summit of Organisation of Turkic States

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 (NNN-Bernama) — The city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan is all set to host the 9th Summit of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS), on Nov 11.

The Uzbekistan embassy in a statement to Bernama on Tuesday said that this was the first time the Central Asian country is hosting the summit. Uzbekistan joined the organisation in 2019.

Other members of the organisation are Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkey. Hungary and Turkmenistan have observer status.

The Organisation of Turkic States, formerly known as the Cooperation Council of Turkic-speaking States (Turkic Council), was established on Oct 3, 2009.

The statement further said that the 8th summit was held in Istanbul in November 2021, where important decisions were made on the future of the association, including the renaming of the Council to Organisation of Turkic States.

It said that during his speech at the Istanbul Summit, Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev had expressed his conviction that the decision to rename the Turkic Council will provide a solid foundation for the further development of members’ cooperation.

This important step will raise the organisation’s activities to a qualitatively new level, significantly increasing its role and authority in the international arena, the statement said.

The Turkic languages are spoken by some 200 million people.
