NEW YORK, Sept 24 (NNN-ANDINA) — Peru President Pedro Castillo reaffirmed the reestablishment of diplomatic relations with the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), also known as Western Sahara, and ratified the recognition of its sovereignty.

During a work meeting the Head of State held with Foreign Affairs Minister Mohamed Salem Uld Salek, the possibility of an SADR Embassy operating in Peru was raised.

The top official said that respect for the principle of self-determination of the peoples is essential, adding that all conflicts and disagreements in any domestic or international sphere must be resolved through dialogue.

Within this framework, Castillo pointed out that these elements are essential for democratic institutions, the balance of powers, and the country’s economic reactivation.

The meeting was also attended by Peru’s Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Roberto Sanchez, Permanent representative to the United Nations Manuel Rodriguez Cuadros, as well as by a delegation of the SADR Foreign Affairs Ministry.

The meeting was held at the Peruvian Consulate in New York City on Wednesday when Castillo participated in the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly on Sept 19-21.

The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic is a partially recognized state, recognised by 41 UN member states, located in western Morocco, which claims the non-self-governing territory of Western Sahara. — NNN-ANDINA
