KIGALI, Sept 23 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — The Rwandan parliament will host the 145th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) from October 11 to 15, it was announced.

The meeting will be attended by more than a thousand delegates from 120 IPU member parliaments, including 60 presidents and vice-presidents, according to a statement from the Rwandan national senate.

During the meeting, issues related to gender equality, human trafficking, climate change and food insecurity, among others, will be addressed.

The organizers reported that the forum will facilitate exchanges on good practices related to gender conflicts and encourage parliaments to engage in transformative actions.

Rwanda is one of the countries in Africa with the highest representation of women in the Senate.

In 2008, its Chamber of Deputies was the first national parliament elected with more women than men, the text states.

The country also has a relatively young congress, with half of its deputies under the age of 45, well above the world average of 29.85%, also tracked by the IPU. The IPU is the world organization of national parliaments and is made up of 178 member states. Its work focuses on empowering legislatures, promoting peace, democracy and sustainable development. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
