Nigerian security forces kill gunmen, rescue kidnappees in northern state; 4 soldiers, 2 civilians killed in terrorist attack in Mali

ABUJA, Aug 8 (NNN-Xinhua) — Eight gunmen were killed and six kidnapped victims were rescued by the military and police in Nigeria’s northern Katsina state, police said.

Gambo Isah, the police spokesperson in Katsina, said in a statement that police operatives conducted on Saturday morning an intelligence-based operation, repelling gunmen and rescuing the six kidnapped victims.

Eight gunmen on the run were killed in a follow-up operation by the Nigerian air force in the same area on Sunday, Isah said.

The most populous African country has been plagued by a series of armed attacks in recent months.

Meanwhile, four Malian soldiers and two civilians were killed and two Malian soldiers and two civilians were wounded in a terrorist attack in Mali’s southeastern town of Tessit, the army said in a statement in BAMAKO.

“Around 3:00 p.m., the units of the Malian Armed Forces in Tessit reacted vigorously against a complex and coordinated attack by the Armed Terrorist Groups,” the statement said.

During the fighting, the army killed five terrorists, the statement added. — NNN-XINHUA
