Saudi-Iran Talks May Pave Way For Restoring Diplomatic Ties: Iraqi Spokesman

BAGHDAD, Apr 27 (NNN-NINA) – Talks between Saudi Arabia and Iran, held in Iraq, may pave the way for the normalisation of diplomatic ties between the two countries, Iraqi Foreign Ministry’s spokesman, said yesterday.

The 5th round of talks between Tehran and Riyadh was held in Iraq’s capital, Baghdad, last Thursday, in “a peaceful atmosphere and showed positive understanding,” Ahmed al-Sahaf was quoted as saying.

The talks, which were also attended by Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa al-Kadhimi, covered a variety of topics, including security issues.

By hosting such talks, Iraq hopes to create a platform for similar rapprochement dialogues in the region, according to al-Sahaf.

Saudi Arabia cut diplomatic ties with Iran in early 2016, in protest against the attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran, following the Saudi execution of a Shiite cleric.

The tense ties between the two rivals have shown signs of improvement, since they resumed direct talks on normalising diplomatic relations in Apr, 2021.– NNN-NINA
