Update: At Least Six Killed In New Year Celebrations Blasts In Southern Afghanistan

LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, March 23 (NNN-AGENCIES) – At least four people were killed and 10 others wounded, after two explosions rocked Lashkar Gah, capital of Afghanistan’s southern province of Helmand, during the New Year celebrations today (Saturday), a local official said.

“Officials and ordinary people were celebrating the Afghan New Year and the National Farmers’ Day in Lashkar Gah sports stadium in the morning. Two explosions went off during the ceremony at around 10:00 a.m. local time,” the official said.

“The blasts affected people and the number of victims is still being counted,” he said.

Police and the rescue team reached the site following the incident and all the injured people were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Unofficial sources said that four people were killed and 10 others, including provincial governor and local officials, were wounded in the blasts.

The nature of the blasts were not known at the time.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, so far.– NNN-AGENCIES
